This abstract piece of copper wall art has a heavily weathered, colorful patina of browns, reds, greens and blues. These colors form on copper when it is exposed to salts, moisture and acids, and this natural process was intensified in the studio. This piece fits well in contemporary, modern settings or anywhere that could use a splash of color. The piece can be displayed vertically or horizontally on a french cleat hanger.
MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION
This sculpture was constructed from a 20-gauge copper sheet bent into a box shape with an wooden support structure fitted inside. The corners were TIG welded and ground smooth to maintain the illusion of a solid metal slab 1 ¼ inches thick. The back edges were wrapped around the wood structure and mechanically attached.
The piece is set in a black aluminum Nielsen frame, a high-quality frame commonly used in galleries and museums for its clean lines and durability. The slim profile keeps the focus on the artwork itself. This is a floater-style frame, meaning the copper artwork appears to “float” within the frame rather than being pressed against it. There is a 1/4 inch gap between the copper and the frame on all sides.
DIMENSIONS AND HANGING
The framed dimensions are 31¼ x 21¼ x 2 inches. The copper artwork itself measures 30 inches tall by 20 inches wide and 1½ inches deep. It weighs approximately 23 pounds. The artwork hangs flush against the wall using a french cleat hanger, and can be displayed vertically or horizontally.
FINISH AND PATINA
When exposed to atmospheric elements over many years, copper naturally oxidizes and changes color, slowly turning dark brown and eventually green. This natural aging process was accelerated in the studio using various acids, chemicals, moisture and salts to produce a complex, varied patina of brown, black, blue and green tones.
The copper panel was completely buried in a bed of damp wood chips for ten days, which held the chemical solutions in direct contact with the metal while selectively limiting exposure to oxygen to produce this mottled effect. The resulting patterns are like an abstract painting, where one might see a fiery sunset, the distant glow of city lights or ocean waves washing over a sandy beach.
Once the desired colors had developed, the sculpture was washed to stop the chemical reactions and sealed with multiple coats of a clear protective lacquer to preserve the finish and prevent any further oxidation over time.
This sculpture is intended for indoor display only.
