An exceptional and rare example of 18th-century craftsmanship, this mid-1700s lacquered wood box features a finely executed hand-painted portrait. The lid depicts a young woman in period-correct attire, mindfully engaged in knitting with a yarn basket at her side.
• Artistry & Style: The portrait is rendered with remarkable detail, showcasing the delicate features of the subject and the textures of her garments. The box itself is finished in a deep, dark lacquer with a classic gold-leaf border framing the central image.
• Unique Patterning: The reverse side of the box features a beautiful, naturally aged "tortoise-shell" or mottled lacquer effect, consisting of intricate amber-toned circular patterns against a dark ground.
• Construction: This is a slim, hand-held case—likely used for spectacles, tobacco, or calling cards—featuring a characteristic 18th-century curved top and a bellows-style opening.
• Condition: This piece remains in good antique condition. The surface displays a desirable heavy craquelure (fine spider-web cracking) consistent with authentic 18th-century lacquerwork. There is minor age-related wear to the leather/fabric interior gussets and edges, which only serves to confirm its significant age and provenance.
