This antique early 20th century sepia panoramic photograph captures a military battalion likely from World War I. Measuring approximately 72x8 inches and made of paper with a matte finish, this original gelatin-silver print showcases a unique and historical scene. The unframed photograph, signed by the photographer, offers a glimpse into the past with its documentary style and one-of-a-kind charm. Perfect for collectors interested in military history and vintage photographic images from the early 1900s.
I don’t have any information which military battalion this is, or what year it was made. There are no markings to indicate who or what it is, other than “Bat” penciled on the back, possibly of battalion. The bottom right corner reads “Photo By Abams & Arnett, Athens, GA.” I was not able to find any information on them. The building on the far right is identified by Google Lens as Candler Hall at the University of Georgia in Athens.
This photograph has been stored rolled up, as it has no frame. There is a small tear on the far right edge of the photo. There was another small tear in the middle top that I accidentally made worse while unfurling it. I will be storing it rolled from now on, and I will not unfurl it again, for risk of causing any more damage to it. I welcome any feedback or information you might be able to give me regarding this.
Here are some of the things Google had to say about this photo, but I cannot attest to the accuracy of it:
This vintage photograph depicts a military group posed in front of Candler Hall at the University of Georgia in Athens.
• Building: Candler Hall, built in 1901, is located on UGA's North Campus near Herty Field. ®
• Historical Use: The photograph captures a military unit, likely an ROTC or training detachment during the early 20th century, as the building was used for various university
purposes. •
• Photographer: The text at the bottom indicates the photo was taken by "Abams & Arnett" in Athens, GA.
• Significance: It highlights the intersection of military training and academic life on the historic
campus. ®
This vintage photograph depicts a group of individuals in uniform, likely from the early 20th century, posing in front of a substantial brick building and an antique car.
• The text at the bottom indicates the photo was taken in Athens, Georgia, by a photographer named Arnett.
• The individuals appear to be wearing early scouting or military-style uniforms, suggesting a community or youth organization event. •
• The vehicle in the background is a brass-era automobile, placing the photograph's date roughly between 1910 and 1920.
• Such images document local history, community activities, and transportation fashions of the
era.
It is difficult to determine the exact make and model of the car due to the blurry nature and limited detail in the image. The vehicle appears to be a touring car or roadster from the 1910s or 1920s, a period when many different manufacturers produced similar-looking vehicles.
This image shows a group of U.S. Army soldiers, likely from the Machine Gun Battalion staff around 1918.
• The individuals are wearing WWI-era uniforms, including distinctive campaign hats and riding breeches with high boots. ®
• The soldier in the center is identified in historical archives as Emil Lewis Holmdahl.
• Holmdahl was a notable soldier of fortune, machine gunner, and adventurer who also operated in the Mexican Revolution.
• The photograph was taken as part of their official military service and is in the public domain.
