A handsome and increasingly scarce set of four early 19th century New Hampshire Windsor chairs, signed J.R. Hunt, representing a refined regional interpretation of the classic American form. The “step down” designation refers to the distinctive shaping of the crest rail, which gently graduates across the top, giving the chairs a subtle architectural presence. Signed examples such as these offer a wonderful connection to an identified maker working within the rich tradition of New England chairmaking.
These chairs feature beautifully executed bamboo-form turnings to the legs and stretchers, a detail that adds both visual interest and a touch of sophistication to what is otherwise a practical country form. The slender spindles rise gracefully into the shaped crest, while the saddled seats and well-proportioned frames reflect the balance of comfort and durability that Windsor chairs are known for. The surfaces have developed a warm, honest patina over time that really highlights the craftsmanship and age of the set.
The chairs are in nice antique condition consistent with age and normal use. There is expected wear throughout, including surface marks and areas of finish wear from years of use. One spindle on one chair has been repaired, which does not detract from the overall stability or presentation of the set. All four chairs remain sturdy and very usable, making them a versatile and attractive option for both everyday dining and decorative placement in a period-inspired interior. 36h x 20w x 16d seat height 17.5
