This piece of art is so beautiful and very subtle, yet it presence expands beyond it's size.
This is a Studio Art Pottery Covered Vessel created by Gerry Williams. It shows a color palette inspired by nature on the exterior with a rich soft green-blue wash of color overlayed onto an earthy buttery brown. Tiny pebbles in the clay rise just beyond the surface giving the whole exterior a pattern of tiny raised bumps. The firing process might shrink the clay slightly, allowing these small protrusions to happen naturally. The interior base and lid are covered in a white slip, and the brown interior specs are flattened and smooth to the touch. It is a beautiful object that could be used as a special storage pot or just displayed on it's own to highlight it's stunning color. It's a very understated and calming stoneware pot. The exact color is hard to capture in photographs, so I've added close-up shots that are closer to the "true" color. This covered vessel is in perfect condition.
Gerry Williams ( 1926-2014 ) was an American potter who set up his studio in Southern New Hampshire in 1949. In 1972, Gerry and his wife co-founded the Studio Potter Magazine, an International Journal that became one of the most influential ceramic publications in the United States. It was the pulse of everything ceramics, and allowed Gerry to interact with the most innovative and cutting edge ceramicists working in the U.S., and was read and studied by fans and admirers of highly skilled potters like me.
Gerry's work is presently in several museums including the American Museum of Ceramic Art, The Smithsonian museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
