This really great early 19th century Sheraton period bowfront chest is a classic example of refined Federal-era design, where elegance and restraint come together beautifully. The softly curved façade, delicate proportions, and understated ornamentation reflect the influence of English Sheraton design as it was interpreted by American craftsmen. Pieces like this were made to bring a sense of sophistication to the home, and they remain just as appealing today for their timeless lines and versatility.
Crafted in mahogany, the chest showcases a particularly striking grain pattern across the drawer fronts, with rich figuring that creates a sense of depth and movement. The bowfront form adds a subtle architectural presence, while the reeded quarter columns on either side provide a nice vertical contrast to the flowing curve. The drawers are fitted with period-style brasses and feature elegant inlay stringing that frames each front nicely. Altogether, it’s a piece that feels both substantial and refined, with a lot of visual interest without being overly ornate.
The chest is in nice antique condition consistent with age and normal use. There is expected wear throughout, including surface marks, minor finish variation, light imperfections and a missing escutcheon that speak to its age and authenticity. The top shows a crack caused by seasonal expansion and contraction, which is visible in the photos and typical of solid wood construction of this period. The drawers operate as they should, and the piece remains sturdy and very usable. Overall, this is a really great example of a Sheraton bowfront chest with beautiful presence and classic proportions. 37h x 43w x 22d
