This really great English William & Mary gateleg table dates to the early 18th century and represents one of the most practical and enduring forms of early English furniture. Designed with flexibility in mind, the drop leaves can be raised to create a generous dining or serving surface, or lowered to conserve space—making it just as functional today as it was over 300 years ago. This particular example was deaccessioned from the Mead Museum in Amherst, Massachusetts, adding a layer of provenance that collectors will certainly appreciate.
The table is crafted from walnut, with a rich, deep tone and a beautifully aged surface that speaks to its long history. The base features classic William & Mary characteristics, including turned legs and stretchers that give the piece both strength and visual rhythm. The gateleg mechanism swings out smoothly to support the leaves, and the presence of a single drawer adds a useful and somewhat less common feature for storing linens or small items.
The table is in nice antique condition consistent with age and normal use. There is visible wear to the top, including surface marks, scratches, and areas of age-related wear that are typical for a piece of this age and use. The base shows expected wear as well, with minor imperfections that do not detract from its overall stability and usability. Overall, this is a really great early table with a lot of character—an authentic and functional piece of English furniture history with notable museum provenance. 30h x 48w x 24d closed 61d open
