The pendant hangs from a hand-rolled 22K gold chain which has a screw-off end to allow for interchanging pendants. The pendant itself measures .75" x 1.75" on a 16.5" chain. India, Mid 1900's. A tumbled emerald hangs from the bottom. The mythology of the Navaratna is quite auspicious, royal and sacred to most Asian countries, regardless of differences in culture and religion. It brings balance and benefit to the wearer. The stones relate to deities and celestial bodies. The following is a translation: 1. Ruby for Surya (Sun), 2. Pearl for Chandra (Moon), 3. Red Coral for Mangala (Mars), 4. Emerald for Budha (Mercury), 5. Yellow sapphire for Brhaspati (Jupiter), 6. Diamond for Shukra (Venus), 7. Blue Sapphire for Shani (Saturn), 8. Hessonite for Rahu (the ascending node of the Moon), 9. Cat's Eye for Ketu (the descending note of the Moon).
