This sculpture has an abstract geologic design that is open to viewer interpretation. People see different natural elements within its shape like a lake bed, topographical map, a weathered landscape or a jagged coastline. Others see a raw geode or a natural mineral formation. The open-ended design works in a range of interior styles. The sculpture's modern style fits well with contemporary decor and natural materials like wood and stone. Only one has been made.
MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION
This piece is made from copper sheet metal that has been hammered by hand into a three-dimensional relief. Though it looks like a thick solid slab, the sculpture is a metal shell shaped from a single sheet of copper. Inside the shell is a wood support structure that adds internal stability and provides a secure place to attach the hanging hardware.
The copper was shaped using a variety of hammers, punches and air-powered tools that pushed it into form. The surface depth was driven directly into the metal by thousands of hammer blows, rather than created by adding or removing material. These hammer marks are visible across the sculpture's surface, creating a unique texture that tells the story of its construction. The color contrast between the clean copper surface and the recessed green patina accentuates the 1/4 inch physical depth of the dimensional relief.
This sculpture is for indoor display only, as the wood components are not suitable for exposure to moisture or outdoor conditions.
FINISH AND PATINA
Copper naturally oxidizes and changes color over many years, slowly turning dark brown and eventually green. The green is a the result of a chemical reaction within the copper, which forms colorful copper carbonates and sulfates when exposed to atmospheric elements. This process was accelerated in the studio over several weeks using acids, chemicals, moisture and salts to achieve the vibrant green patina seen here. The sculpture has been sealed with Permalac architectural lacquer to protect the finish.
DIMENSIONS AND HANGING
This sculpture measures 33 inches tall by 15 inches wide, with a depth of 1¼ inches. The piece weighs 15 lbs and hangs flush against the wall, horizontally or vertically, on a french cleat style hanger.
