Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney (1899–1992), known as “C.V.” or “Sonny,” was a financier, philanthropist, and accomplished horseman—carrying forward the sporting legacy of the Whitney and Vanderbilt families. The son of Harry Payne Whitney and Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, founder of the Whitney Museum of American Art, his influence extended beyond racing to ventures such as Pan American Airways and Selznick International Pictures.
His wife, Marylou Whitney (1925–2019), the celebrated “Queen of Saratoga,” became a defining figure in American racing culture, known for revitalizing Saratoga’s social and sporting traditions.
