An exceptional sculptural coffee table formed from naturally aged grapevine trunks, featuring a rare double-tier glass design. This piece was produced by SierraArts (Virginia, active c. 1994–2009), a small studio known for crafting organic, one-of-a-kind furniture from reclaimed vineyard materials.
According to correspondence with a former SierraArts builder involved in the original production, the wood used in these tables was harvested from old Napa Valley vineyards—primarily Tokay grapevines—many already 100–150 years old at the time of construction. The raw material was transported to Virginia, where each table was assembled and finished entirely by hand.
These works were produced in small numbers and sold through art galleries, positioned as functional sculpture rather than conventional furniture.
This particular example is notable for its substantial mass, dynamic interwoven base, and uncommon two-tier configuration, a more complex and less frequently encountered form than standard single-glass designs.
Additional details provided by the original builder indicate that SierraArts produced several edge profiles over time—including pencil, beveled, and ogee edges—and that this table dates to approximately the mid-1990s through early 2000s period.
Details:
Hand-assembled grapevine trunk base (naturally formed, not carved)
Double-tier glass construction with original thick upper glass featuring a shaped (ogee) edge; the lower tier now fitted with slightly thinner glass with a simple pencil edge, likely replacing an original ogee-edged counterpart
Upper surface: 30” diameter, 20” high; lower surface: 26” diameter, 14” high. The upper tier overlaps the lower by approximately 8”, with a 6” separation between the two surfaces
Organic, sculptural form—each example is unique
American studio craft, late 20th to early 21st century
