Lowell Ellsworth Smith was born in Canton, Ohio in 1924. He earned his BFA from Miami University (Ohio) and further studied with the Famous Artists Schools in Westport, Connecticut. After beginning his career as a commercial artist at Canton Art Service, Smith later moved to Hudson, Ohio, where he worked as an illustrator at Manning Art Studio in Cleveland before becoming a full-time freelance artist.

Starting in 1960, he taught watercolor painting from his home studio and led workshops in Rockport, Massachusetts; Burnsville, North Carolina; as well as throughout the Southwest and Mexico. His work is held in over 500 private collections. Smith was a member of the American Watercolor Society, the National Academy of Western Art, and the Rockport Art Association. See less
