The original was painted in 1867 and is currently held in the collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Art.

This work is a notable example of classical Romanticism, depicting a scene from ancient Roman life with affluent Roman patrons admiring bronze and marble sculptures, including a Neoclassical bronze of a poet and a marble depiction of the Laocoön group.
