A fine monumental antique 18th Georgian Neoclassical water/tea urn, by Samuel Godbehere and Edward Wigan, London, 1789. A rare and important piece of investment quality silver, originally from the Clan Wedderburn, who were a prominent noble Scottish family from the lowlands/borders.
The urn is Neoclassical in style and dates to the reign of King George III, the tall lid with an urn shaped finial, the lid is finely engraved, with the Clan Wedderburn family crest with a young eagle with the Latin motto " Non Degener" (not Unworthy). The Wedderburn family is a noble clan from the Scottish lowlands/borders, the body of the urn is also engraved with the crest of the Earl of Dundee Henry David Scrymgeour-Wedderburn, the family has it's roots in the 13th century and were instrumental in the Jacobite risings.
The urn has tall exaggerated ribbed handles, the rest of the body of the urn is finely engraved with bright cut bell-flowers and floral garlands, the urn stands on a shaped platform base and raised on ball feet. To the front is a ribbed spout with the original ivory tap. The urn unusually retains the original interior cylinder heater and lid, to receive coals to keep the contents hot, this is also sterling silver and is also hallmarked. The urn is hallmarked in four different places, with the maker's marks for Samuel Godbehere and Edward Wigan, lion passant for sterling silver, the panther's head for London, the head of the monarch King George III and the date letter for 1789.
This very fine piece of Georgian silver is monumental in size at almost 25" tall and is substantial in weight at over 3,572 Grams of sterling silver. Condition is remarkable, truly excellent antique condition, this very fine investment quality silver urn is ready to grace your collection.
