Light and glass meet here in a sculptural gesture that captures the spirit of murano in the 1970s. This pendant lamp, designed by carlo nason and produced by a.v. Mazzega, reflects an era in which experimentation with form and material defined italian lighting.
design
the shade is executed in hand-blown murano glass in a crystal and tobacco colourway, folded into a dynamic, almost origami-like silhouette. Rather than a conventional dome, the glass is shaped into angular, cascading planes that curve downward in four soft points. Subtle air inclusions and flowing internal textures attest to its artisanal production, allowing the light to refract and diffuse in nuanced ways. When illuminated, the tobacco tint warms the glow, creating a golden ambience that enhances both intimate and architectural settings. The transparency of the crystal glass ensures clarity and depth, while the folded structure introduces movement and shadow on surrounding surfaces. Suspended from a minimal chrome canopy and a cord, the composition balances sculptural presence with restraint.
carlo nason, known for his innovative approach to glass within a long murano lineage, frequently sought to challenge the static nature of traditional shades. Here, the interplay between rigidity and fluidity becomes apparent, aligning with the experimental ethos of a.v. Mazzega during that decade.
an expressive yet measured design, suitable above a dining table, in a stairwell, or as a focal point in a curated interior.
