Entirely hand carved, this ebonized-wood pedestal is full of character and a truly impressive display of craftsman skill. It is Italian, from the mid-1800s: the time of Gothic/Renaissance Revival. Designed for function and still fascinatingly mythical, this gryphonic gargoyle was carved with immense attention to detail. The pedestal is largely made up of the body of a lion, with feathered wings that swoop up to support the pedestal top. Clawed paws clutch a crescent shaped heraldic shield with a fleur de lis at the center. The face is undoubtedly the star of the show, with a gargoyle's expressive character; tongue out in a cheeky grimace and eyes wide with hand painted pupils. Stylistically eclectic, full of mysticism, yet entirely functional. This piece is unique in every way and a fabulous statement piece. See less
