A signed stoneware pendant lamp by British studio potter Bernard Rooke (born 1938), hand-built in his Suffolk pottery during the 1960s. The flattened globular body carries Rooke's characteristic applied perforated panel — a field of drilled and pressed circular apertures — set against an unglazed sandy and terracotta surface produced through sculptural rather than commercial firing. When illuminated, the openings cast a layered pattern of light and shadow. Unlit, the piece reads as sculpture.
The impressed ROOKE stamp is crisp and clearly legible on the body.
Pendant lamps represent an almost undocumented format within Rooke's output. His known production centered on table lamp bases and totem floor lamps; no comparable pendant has surfaced in auction records, institutional collections, or the secondary market in recent decades. This is a genuine collector's anomaly — not a repeatable design object.
Rooke's work is held in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Röhsska Museum in Sweden, and the Trondheim Kunstmuseum in Norway.
Original chain suspension hardware retained. Electrical components should be inspected and rewired to local standards before installation.
