A kindred pair of French sculptural table lamps by Philippe Jean — polished brass bird forms on square travertine bases, each signed and numbered within limited editions of 300, dated 1980.
The two lamps share materials, construction, and scale, yet each carries a distinct sculpted bird form. The first (201/300) takes a more compact, architecturally resolved form — a rounded body rising into a sharply articulated neck and angular wing planes that suggest a bird at rest, the geometry taut and still. The second (178/300) is rendered as a dynamic, upward-sweeping figure — a curved wing rising vertically, a pointed tail, and a forward thrust that conveys lift and directed motion, as though caught in the moment of taking flight. Together they present as two expressions of the same visual language, complementary rather than identical.
Both sculptures are finished in mirror-polished brass that shifts dramatically as light moves across the convex and faceted planes. The bases are square travertine blocks with visible natural aggregate, providing warm material contrast to the reflective metal above. Both lamps are fitted with new pleated white lampshades.
Substantial enough to hold their own as decorative objects even unlit, the pair is well suited to flank a mantle, anchor a console, or frame a sideboard. Each lamp is individually signed, numbered, and dated by the artist.
Can be fitted with US or international plugs of your choice.
About Philippe Jean
Philippe Jean was a French designer active in the late 20th century, known for sculptural lighting that bridges fine art and functional design. Working primarily in polished brass with stone bases, Jean produced limited-edition pieces characterized by modernist line, stylized natural forms, and considered material contrast. His bird-form lamps from the 1980s remain among his most sought-after works, valued for their sculptural clarity, rarity, and enduring decorative presence. This piece has an attribution mark,
