Antique japanese merchant chest (chōba-dansu) in keyaki wood dating from the late meiji to early taishō period, circa 1880–1920.
this type of japanese merchant chest, known as a chōba-dansu, was traditionally used in shops and merchant houses to store documents, money and business records. Its structure combines multiple drawers with a secure compartment designed to organize valuable items efficiently.
the chest features five main drawers of varying sizes and a lateral compartment with a small door concealing additional interior drawers, a characteristic element found in many examples of traditional japanese cabinetry used by merchants.the exterior is crafted primarily from keyaki wood (japanese zelkova), one of the most prized woods in japanese antique furniture. Known for its durability and expressive grain, keyaki was commonly used for visible surfaces, while interior structures were often made from lighter woods such as sugi cedar or kiri.
the piece retains its original hand-forged iron hardware, including drawer pulls, reinforcing plates and a large lock plate. These elements not only provided structural strength but also reflect the aesthetic character of meiji period furniture.
an interesting feature of this chest is the presence of an old printed paper fragment attached to the side panel, likely a meiji-period advertisement or calendar. Such details often reflect the everyday commercial environment in which these pieces were used.the surface shows a rich natural patina developed over decades of use, enhancing the authenticity and character of this collectible japanese furniture.
today this piece can serve as a chest of drawers, storage cabinet or decorative statement piece in interiors inspired by the wabi-sabi aesthetic, japandi interior design or minimalist interiors.
