A rather rare Ukrainian icon of Saint Theodosius of Chernigov, the patron saint of healing.


Saint Theodosius lived in the 17th century and this icon is from the 19th century when he was canonised in 1896.


The icon was made and sold between 1896 (canonisation) and 1918 (revolution) to the pilgrims at his monastery in Chernigov Yeletsk Monastery and in Kiyv at the Monastery of the Saints where he is buried.


An interesting feature is, that the actually rather well painted icon is in the old Byzantian style, aka old school style, and not in the general style of the era for icon painting, the romanticised Neo-Renaissance Italian style.

This is all in line with the esthetics of Ascetisism of the life of Saint Theodosius, and adds to the value of the icon.

One would like to restore the violated gloria of the saint and secure the attachment of the loosened parts of the painted surfaces by a small restoration effort.
