A rare and superb pair of 1940s wall sconces designed by ercole barovier for barovier & toso, executed in richly textured hand-blown murano glass and mounted on elegant patinated brass arms. These “rostrato” glass shades — formed from layers of free-hand sculpted glass — exhibit a dynamic surface full of organic sculptural movement, characteristic of barovier’s mid-century lighting vocabulary. Each shade is crafted with thick, clear murano glass featuring an irregular, highly tactile exterior surface. The glasses are not identical in shape or pattern — a testament to their artisanal production method. Because these were not press-molded but entirely done by hand, slight variations in dimension and texture between the two pieces are consistent with the period and add to their unique character. The glass captures and refracts light with crystalline depth, casting a rich play of highlights and shadows when illuminated. The brass supports are clean and architectural, with a robust horizontal arm extending from the wall plate to securely cradle each glass shade. The brass has developed a warm, even patina over time, enhancing the visual warmth and historic presence of the fixtures while offering a refined contrast to the luminous glass. A highly decorative example of venetian mid-century lighting, these sconces feel both sculptural and functional — suitable for sophisticated residential or hospitality interiors where vintage italian glass lighting is desired. The sconces are currently wired and functional for european electrical standards. They will require rewiring for use in the united states; any adaptation to u.s. Electrical standards is the buyer’s responsibility. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
