Vintage Sunday Morning oil painting after Asher Brown Durand. The artwork captures a tranquil Sunday morning scene, enveloped in the serene beauty of nature. In the foreground, majestic trees frame the scene, their verdant leaves reaching towards an expansive, light-filled sky, towering over the old country farmhouse where figures are leaving for church. The landscape opens up to a gentle hill upon which rests a quaint church, its steeple piercing the horizon. A cobblestone path meanders towards the church, along which a horse and buggy / figures in the distance stroll on their way to a morning service, adding a sense of community and peacefulness to the composition. A river runs through the middle ground, crossed by a stone bridge, while in the background, rolling hills stretch towards the horizon. Grazing animals and lush greenery further contribute to the idyllic and harmonious atmosphere that characterizes this quintessential Romantic landscape.
Asher Brown Durand (b.1796–1886) was a foundational American painter and engraver, best known as a leader of the Hudson River School. Transitioning from a successful engraving career, he became a renowned landscape painter advocating for direct, naturalistic observation of American scenery. Born in Jefferson Village (now Maplewood), New Jersey. He was apprenticeship to engraver Peter Maverick from 1812 to 1817, and entered into full partnership with Maverick running the New York branch of the Newark-based firm. The partnership dissolved in 1820 over Durand accepting John Trumbull's commission to engrave The Declaration of Independence. The completion of the commission in 1823 established Durand as one of the country's finest engravers. However in 1835, he abandoned engraving and took up painting.
