It is our opinion that this is one of the most impressive works by Vojo Stanic, a larger scale folk … Read more It is our opinion that this is one of the most impressive works by Vojo Stanic, a larger scale folk scene depicting an array of characters on a carousel or ferris wheel. The piece is signed in Cyrillic and dated 1960.

Vojo Stanić, painter and sculptor, born in Podgorica on February 3rd 1924.

He attended elementary and high school in Niksic. In 1944 he took part in the National Liberation War, as part of the Sixth Montenegrin Brigade.

He graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts, Sculpture Department, in the class of Professor Lojze Dolinar in Belgrade in 1951. After completing his studies Stanic comes to Herceg Novi where he works as professor at the School of Applied Arts until 1958 and then, later on, at the Teacher Training College, Department for Fine Arts, until its suspension in 1966.

He was on study tours in Oslo, Rome and Paris in 1958 where he gets acquainted with the works of great masters, especially surrealists.

He had over 70 individual and more than 150 collective exhibitions at home and abroad. He had individual exhibitions in: Belgrade, Dubrovnik, Titograd, Oslo, Niksic, Rome, Novi Sad, Cetinje, Motovun, Cacak, Herceg Novi, Bolzano, Sombor, Sveti Stefan, Berlin, Zagreb, New York, Moscow, London, Beijing, Shanghai, Dubai, in the Caribbean … He participated at collective exhibitions in: Paris, Edinburgh, New York, Alexandria, Stockholm, Zurich, Rome, Bari, Hasselt, Charlerois, Tournai, Tokyo, Budapest, London, Mexico, Copenhagen, Moscow, Washington, Vienna, Cologne, Dubai, New York, Shanghai, Beijing, Prague, Gustavia (the Caribbean)…

He represented Montenegro at the 47th Venice Biennial in 1997.

He received numerous awards, among which: the July 13th Award in 1960 and 1968; the AVNOJ Award in 1966; the City of Zagreb Award, 1966; the November 13th Salon Award, Cetinje, 1968, 1973, 1978; the Politika Award, Belgrade, 1970; Award at the Jubilee Exhibition National Liberation Struggle in the Works of Fine Artists, Belgrade, 1971; the Herceg Novi Winter Salon Award, 1973; the Town of Herceg Novi Award, 1974; the 8th Memorial Exhibition Nadezda Petrovic Award, Cacak, 1974; the Association of Fine Artists of Montenegro Jubilee Exhibition Award, 1976; the Niksic Salon Award 1978, 1979; Fine Art Award Diatreta, Pljevlja, 2010; July 13th Award for Lifetime Achievement, 2014.

His paintings are represented in many museums, galleries and private collections in Montenegro and abroad.

Since 1952 he has been member of the Association of Fine Artists of Montenegro. He has been elected associate member of the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts on June 24th 1977 and full member on March 1st 1985. He is member of the Doclean Academy of Sciences and Arts, Matica crnogorska and the Montenegrin PEN Centre.

Since 2011 he has the status of prominent cultural creator of Montenegro.

One of his works sold at Madlart Auction House in 2021 for over $13000. See less
