The lamp was a popular decorative piece from that era. The bronze-tone base features a classical figure surrounded by cascading oil drops, plastic foliage and an electric light located above to illuminate the oil and the central statue.

These lamps work by using a small pump to circulate mineral oil through hidden tubes to the top, where it drips down nylon strings (fishing line) to create a "raining" effect around a central figurine

The 1970’s-style lampshade is original to the lamp and features a 1 in wide decorative gimp braid trim along the bottom.

The lamp switch is three-way. One click turns on the bulb over the goddess, the next click turns on only the main lamp and the next turns on both.

The lamp is unmarked but it was produced by Johnson Industries.

Overall – 36 in (91.5 cm) tall x 14 ¾ in (37.5 cm) diameter
Base – 32 in (81.3 cm) tall x 6 in (15.2 cm) diameter
Shade – 15 ½ in (39.4 cm) tall x 14 3/4 in (37.5 cm) diameter
Weighs 6 lbs 4.7 oz.

CONDITION
Is in excellent working condition. Both lights and the oil pump work. It has been cleaned although there are still remnants of oil in it. There are few scratches on the body of the lamp; the only significant wear is to the wood trim piece around base. There is some staining between the trim and the rim. All strings are intact and original. The shade is original and in very good vintage condition with just a couple of creases in the backing and a small amount of wear along the seam. It has no stains.

Please note that I drained most of the glycerin for shipping and you will need to replace with new mineral oil if you want it to “rain”. They use mineral oil (usually food-grade or specifically labeled for rain lamps) to function correctly and avoid clogging the pump. When I ship, I will also remove the goddess figure. It can be reinstalled by screwing into the bottom of her platform.

A quintessential example of 1970s kitsch-glamour, this Johnson Industries piece remains a sought-after relic of mid-century lighting design, notable for its intact original components and functional internal mechanics. See less
