A superb antique Victorian mahogany two tier dumbwaiter of exceptional cabinet maker quality and proportions, more commonly used today as a sideboard or buffet server, raised on finely turned and fluted supports with original castors.
The top is finished with an elegant pierced gallery back centred by a circular motif, a refined and well executed feature that immediately sets this piece apart. Below are two drawers with original carved handles, above a useful lower tier with a further pair of drawers beneath.
The rich mahogany displays a deep, warm colour with excellent figuring throughout. The drawers are finely made with crisp hand cut dovetail joints and solid linings, demonstrating the level of craftsmanship associated with high quality workshops of the period. The confident proportions, detailing and finish strongly suggest a piece produced by a skilled cabinet maker rather than mass production.
Originally, dumbwaiters such as this were used in dining rooms for serving food and drinks, allowing items to be placed within easy reach without the need for a full sideboard. Today they are highly versatile pieces, most commonly used as sideboards, console tables or serving stations.
A highly decorative and practical piece of outstanding quality with excellent presence, comparable to the standard associated with the best Victorian cabinet makers.
