The rectangular tabletop with its generously rounded corners is one of the piece's most successful details. This treatment of the corners, far from being insignificant, softens the silhouette while reinforcing the impression of mass and solidity—a tension between the power of the volume and the gentle curve that characterizes the best design of this period. The solid elm, with its dark, tight grain and chocolate and tobacco hues, reveals a dense and warm material of beautiful depth.
