Antique Japanese Edo era calligraphy painting of the “Zen Mind” or ensō. In Zen art, an ensō is a circle hand-drawn in one or two uninhibited brushstrokes to express the Zen mind. The ensō symbolizes absolute enlightenment, strength, elegance, the universe and emptiness. It is characterized by a minimalism influenced by Zen Buddhist philosophy, and Japanese aesthetics.
Japanese calligraphy, known as shodō, is the traditional artistic practice of writing Japanese characters (kanji and kana) using a brush, ink, and paper. It was developed into an abstract art form and became very popular among Zen Buddhist monks, as well as the aristocracy and samurai. Calligraphy focuses on fluid, expressive strokes that convey emotion and spirit, blending artistry with Zen-like mental discipline.
This painting has been recovered (cut) from an antique scroll, folding screen, fusuma door or album leaf and has been newly framed.
The painting can be bought separately or as a set of 2 calligraphy paintings (please find the set in our Chairish shop to save on shipping cost).
