This is a remarkable 19th-century survivor of early German toy-making. Measuring 5" long x 3.75" tall, this flocked composition lion is identical to a documented specimen (Object 1237351) held in the Museum of Saxon Folk Art in Dresden, which dates back to 1848. Originating from the famous Seiffen region of the Erzgebirge, this piece represents the pinnacle of mid-19th-century animalier folk art. Unlike later 20th-century reproductions, this antique lion is crafted from a dense early composition material with hand-finished anatomical details. The golden-brown flocking is in truly excellent condition for its 175+ years of age, featuring a distinctively textured mane and a detailed, hand-painted open mouth.

This is in excellent condition. There is a small removable dot of wax on the back, but the flocking is consistent and painted face is charming. See less
