A quatrefoil is a symmetrical shape formed from the outline of four ovals or leaves. It is an ancient design tracing to 462 AD and can be found in art, architecture, heraldry and religious symbolism. The quatrefoil enjoyed its peak popularity during the Gothic and Renaissance eras, most commonly as tracery in Gothic architecture.
This design adds structure and contrast to other designs, like florals, with the symmetrical quatrefoil heavily embroidered in an azure shade of blue on a cream linen blend ground.
