This exceptional 1935 watercolor is the work of Alfred Hermann Schroff (1863–1939), a prominent figure in the West Coast art scene and former head of the Fine Arts Department at the University of Oregon. Painted during the height of the "California Scene" movement, this piece captures a serene courtyard garden with the masterful light and fluid brushwork characteristic of Schroff’s plein air style.
Schroff was a highly decorated artist, winning a medal for his work at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and exhibiting at the Portland Art Museum. His works from the 1930s are particularly sought after, as he spent much of this period painting in the artist colonies of Carmel and Laguna Beach.
