An exceptional and rare example of a "stacked" Indonesian ceremonial mask, this piece represents the duality of the human spirit. Hand-carved from a single block of native Pule wood, the mask features a two-tiered iconography: a refined, serene "Alus" (noble) face at the base, topped by a fierce "Buta" (demon-guardian) protector in a vibrant green and red polychrome finish.
Crowning the piece are a pair of authentic Muntjac (Barking Deer) antlers, a feature traditionally associated with the Manjangan Saluang (Deer Shrines) of Bali and East Java. In Indonesian folklore, the deer is a spiritual messenger, and masks adorned with real antlers were often used as household or temple protectors to ward off malevolent forces.
The mask shows a magnificent, naturally aged patina. The interior exhibits the rhythmic chisel marks of a master carver and the deep oxidation expected of a century-old artifact. The exterior paint shows authentic "crazing" and "alligatoring," particularly in the white lead/bone-pigment areas, providing undeniable proof of its antique status.
