This is a stone statue of a Sōtai Dōsojin (paired roadside deity), believed to have been created in the early to middle Edo period (17th–18th century).
Dōsojin are protective deities in Japanese folk belief, traditionally enshrined at village boundaries, crossroads, and mountain passes. They were believed to guard against evil spirits entering from outside and to watch over the safety of travelers and local communities.
This piece represents a paired form of Dōsojin, yet rather than depicting a male and female couple, it belongs to an earlier and more archaic type known as “monk-form gasshō type” , in which both figures appear in monk-like form with their hands joined in prayer.
Such representations are considered among the earlier forms of Sōtai Dōsojin. In later periods, the figures evolved into clearly defined male and female forms, often shown embracing or holding hands in more symbolic and approachable expressions.
For this reason, this work can be appreciated as a quiet and authentic expression of early Dōsojin belief, preserving a simple and deeply spiritual form of devotion.
The carving is highly restrained and free of unnecessary ornamentation.
Rounded heads, gently descending robe lines, and the calm gesture of hands pressed together at the chest. The two figures stand closely side by side, conveying a sense of harmony, balance, and quiet faith.
The material is believed to be granite, with a subtly purplish tone that gives it a refined and slightly uncommon appearance compared to typical stone Buddhas. The surface gently shifts in expression depending on the light, adding to its charm.
In terms of condition, natural weathering consistent with age is present, but there are no significant damages or structural issues. The sculpture remains stable and can stand securely on its own.
With a height of approximately 22.5 cm (8.9 in) and a weight of about 4 kg (8.8 lbs), it is compact and easy to place in a variety of settings.
Placed at an entrance, it can gently harmonize the atmosphere of a space.
Indoors, it brings a quiet sense of calm and subtle spiritual presence.
It does not dominate the space, but quietly accompanies it.
A stone figure that simply exists — yet is deeply felt.
Why not introduce a sense of gentle protection and quiet prayer into your everyday life?
