This is a stone statue of Bishamonten (also known as Tamonten), believed to have been created during the Edo period.
What is most noteworthy is its rarity.
Even after many years of handling stone Buddhas, encountering a guardian deity of this kind is extremely uncommon, and pieces like this rarely appear on the market. Among such works, this example stands out for its particularly strong and commanding presence.
Bishamonten (Tamonten) is one of the Four Heavenly Kings in Buddhism, serving as the guardian of the north.
Known in Sanskrit as Vaiśravaṇa, he has long been revered as a deity associated with wealth, fortune in battle, and victory. In Japan, he is also counted among the Seven Lucky Gods, symbolizing prosperity, success, and protection—making him an especially auspicious figure.
For this reason, this piece is not merely a sculptural object, but can also be incorporated into a space as a presence that brings protection and positive energy.
Placed at an entrance, it is believed to help regulate the flow of energy from outside; set in a garden, it adds a sense of structure and tension to the space; and indoors, it introduces both a quiet strength and a reassuring presence. Even in modern interiors, it functions not only as decoration, but as an element that shapes the atmosphere of a place.
The carving itself is also highly compelling.
The figure holds a pagoda in one hand and a weapon in the other, with one foot stepping forward. The slightly stern expression conveys the strength expected of a guardian deity. Despite the simplicity of the carving, the dignity and authority of a divine protector are clearly expressed.
On the base, two carved characters can be seen.
They appear to read as “長” and “青,” though their exact meaning remains unclear. Nonetheless, such inscriptions offer a glimpse into the devotional context and historical background of the piece, adding an additional layer of interest.
In terms of condition, despite its considerable age, the contours and facial expression remain well preserved, with no major losses. The surface shows natural weathering, giving it a calm and matured texture that reflects the passage of time.
With a height of approximately 51.3 cm and a weight of about 31.15 kg, it has a strong presence and excellent stability.
It stands securely on its own and can be safely displayed.
Placed in a corner of a garden or near an entrance, it brings a sense of quiet tension and protective presence to the space.
Rather than being a mere decorative object, this is a stone figure that stands as a guardian.
A piece that quietly lends strength and meaning to everyday life.

While focusing on Japanese items, we also offer a carefully curated selection of attractive goods from around the world—each evoking the culture and history of its country of origin.
Unlike the traditional Japanese antique furniture and art that have been appreciated overseas until now, we shine a light on the tools and furniture that were used for many years in ordinary Japanese homes and farmhouses. These objects have gained a unique charm over time, their beauty deepened by the history accumulated through daily life. In today’s world, however, many of these precious items are discarded during home demolitions. We are committed to reassessing their value and passing them on to future generations.
Drawing from our extensive experience—having seen tens of thousands of items through direct purchases, markets, and auction houses—we carefully select and present only the most captivating pieces. This is something made possible only through the years of knowledge and expertise we have cultivated.
Rather than focusing on the widely known facets of Japanese art and culture, we highlight the subtle beauty born from the everyday life of common people. It is this rediscovered beauty, steeped in history, that we strive to share with the world.
