A stunning mid-century Japanese porcelain ashtray in the classic Imari (Arita-style) tradition. This piece features a distinctive "drum" or barrel-shaped body, meticulously hand-decorated with vibrant overglaze iron red, underglaze cobalt blue, and rich 22K gold gilding.
Design & Artistry
The Panels: The exterior is divided into four ornate panels. Two panels depict a traditional "Kachō-ga" (Bird and Flower) scene, featuring a small songbird perched amidst blooming peonies and plum blossoms. The alternating panels showcase a deep cobalt blue geometric diamond lattice, a traditional symbol of longevity.
Hand-Painted Details: Authentic hand-applied gold "moriage" dots and brush-stroked enamels provide a tactile, layered texture.
The Mark: The base bears the red square seal for 明陶 (Meitō), a reputable kiln mark from the Arita/Saga region known for high-quality export porcelain during the mid-20th century.

The porcelain remains bright white and highly reflective. Gilding: The gold accents on the rim and within the floral patterns are remarkably well-preserved with minimal rubbing or oxidation. Artisan Variations: As an authentic hand-decorated piece, there are slight misalignments where the painted borders meet the molded cigarette rests. These "pattern skips" are not defects but are characteristic evidence of the multi-stage hand-painting and firing process typical of mid-century Japanese ceramics. less
