This exceptional 1923 oil on board is a quintessential example of Cleveland School Impressionism. Painted during Frank Luis Jirouch’s influential three-year residency in Paris, this work captures a serene European homestead with the textured, confident brushwork that defines his early 20th-century style.
The composition centers on a bright, lime-washed cottage with a sun-drenched terracotta roof, framed by the rhythmic verticality of slender trees. In the foreground, a single white duck glides across a pool of cool-toned water, serving as a charming focal point that grounds the lush, dappled greens of the midground. The heavy impasto visible in the sky and architecture adds a wonderful architectural depth to this small-scale masterpiece.
In original gilt wood frame with a deep cove profile.
About the Artist
Frank Luis Jirouch was a distinguished American sculptor and painter. After studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he moved to Paris in 1921 to study at the Académie Julian. While his public sculptures are landmarks in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, his rare landscape paintings from this specific 1921–1924 window are highly prized for their intimate light and European flair.
