Small Japanese drawer cabinet crafted from paulownia wood (kiri) and made in Japan during the mid to late Showa period, circa 1950–1979. The piece features four drawers with metal handles and delicate decorative motifs inspired by traditional Japanese textile pouches (kinchaku), adding a subtle handcrafted character.During the Showa period, particularly after World War II, Japanese furniture increasingly reflected a balance between practicality and simplicity. Compact storage furniture such as this small chest was commonly used in domestic interiors to store textiles, documents or personal belongings. The cabinet is made from paulownia wood, a material traditionally valued in Japan for its lightness, dimensional stability and natural resistance to humidity. For centuries it has been used for storage furniture and chests designed to protect textiles and personal objects. The drawer fronts are decorated with charming motifs inspired by traditional Japanese drawstring pouches, rendered with delicate colours and fine details. Curved metal handles complement the understated and functional character of the piece. The cabinet retains a warm and even patina, developed naturally through decades of use. It remains in very good condition with minor age-related wear consistent with its period. Thanks to its compact proportions, this cabinet works beautifully as a desk organiser, bedside storage unit or decorative accent piece, bringing a sense of Japanese calm and craftsmanship to contemporary interiors.
