artist pietro fragiacomo (trieste, august 14, 1856 – venice, may 18, 1922) born in trieste to domenico, originally from piran, he moved to venice with his family as a child. In 1877, he enrolled at the academy of fine arts, attending domenico bresolin’s landscape painting school. After abandoning his studies after a year, he continued to paint under the influence of giacomo favretto, with whom he became friends, and later met ettore tito. Unlike favretto and tito, he was not drawn to venetian folklore motifs, instead devoting his attention to the landscape of the lagoon’s hinterland and to the variations of light and color in the sky and on the water. In the titles of his works, he sought to emphasize an intimate approach to the view, understood as a projection of his own state of mind: a prime example is *pace*, which won an award at brera in 1891. In 1895, he joined the organizing committee of the first venice biennale, participating in all subsequent editions from that point on. His vast body of work—approximately 500 cataloged pieces—is now preserved in private collections and in major public collections in italy and abroad.
