artist agostino cottolengo (bra, october 22, 1794 – bra, april 8, 1853) the fifth of twelve children and brother of saint giuseppe benedetto cottolengo, he trained at the accademia albertina in turin, where he enrolled in 1810. He began his career around 1817, devoting himself primarily to painting altarpieces for churches in bra and the surrounding area: among his major works are the four canvases depicting the stories of john the baptist for the archconfraternity of mercy (1832–1834), the martyrdom of saint andrew for the church of saint andrew, and the risen christ for the confraternity of the battuti bianchi (1829). Commissioned by tancredi falletti di barolo, he painted the altarpiece depicting saint charles and saint francis de sales for the basilica of corpus domini in turin (1836). He was also a skilled portraitist of turin’s high clergy and the bishops of the piedmontese dioceses. He ran a school of painting and drawing in bra from 1825 to 1851, training, among others, michelangelo pittatore, domenico fuseri, and bartolomeo bellisio. His work represents a significant bridge between the prevailing neoclassicism and an embryonic regionalist movement. He died in bra in 1853, succumbing to tuberculosis.
