️ Age & Style
Type: French Trumeau Mirror (Overmantel/Pier Mirror)
Origin: French
Style Period: 18th-century manner (Louis XV / Rococo Revival style)
Estimated Age: Late 19th to early 20th century
A grande-scale antique French trumeau — the most architecturally imposing form of the mirror-making tradition. Trumeaux were designed to fill the overmantel space above a fireplace surround, and at 67 inches tall, this example commands a room with the authority of a piece meant for a Parisian hôtel particulier or a château salon.
The upper panel features a painted pastoral scene in the French manner — softly rendered figures in a landscape — set within a moulded gilt frame. Below, the principal mirror plate reflects in aged, subtly foxed glass that gives the room a flattering, atmospheric quality impossible to replicate in new glass. The surrounding carved gilt wood is in the Régence taste: scrolled cartouches, foliate acanthus, and restrained C-scrolls.
Trumeaux of this scale are increasingly difficult to source. Interior designers specify them for entrance galleries, drawing rooms, and master suites where a mirror must do more than reflect — it must anchor the room.
