This is a museum-quality original oil on canvas by the renowned Western artist Buck McCain (American, b. 1943). Titled "Escaped," this 1976 masterwork depicts a classic, action-oriented cowboy scene. McCain’s signature "light-rich realism" is on full display here, capturing the dust, movement, and rugged spirit of the American frontier with exceptional technical skill. McCain’s use of light and shadow on the cowboy and horse highlights the rugged texture of the landscape and the energy of the scene.
The painting is housed in its original, substantial Western-style frame with a textured burlap-style liner that perfectly emphasizes the rustic, masculine theme of the artwork. This piece boasts incredible provenance, featuring a rare hand-written personal inscription on the verso:
"7/23/76 to Dick and Charlotte — WHITEMAN — Thanks — Buck McCain"
Buck McCain is a fifth-generation rancher whose work is a cornerstone of modern Western Art. This 1976 painting comes from the pivotal year McCain began his world-renowned career in sculpture. A former Artist of the Year (Friends of Western Art), McCain is best known for his monumental "The Invocation" bronze. His works are prized by serious collectors and held in prestigious permanent collections including the Booth Western Art Museum, the Eiteljorg Museum, and the Phoenix Art Museum.
