Valuable Antique Quilt
Quilted by Grandma Mary Jane (Molly) Stults
Born April 10, 1873 - Died March 31, 1937
Mary Jane Stults quilted this quilt. She took the seeds out of the
cotton and combed the cotton by hand. The lining is made with thin cotton. It appears that Grandma treated the lining with pokeberry juice. Some faded printing is still on the lining, which indicates that the fabric was previously used for flour sacks or some commercial purpose.
The faded printing serves as an authenticating factor for the source. Notably, the top portion of the quilt is composed of cotton scraps, as synthetic fabrics were not prevalent during that era. The quilting itself is meticulously hand-stitched, employing a distinctive pattern. It is widely believed that this quilt dates back approximately eighty years. Notably, the quiltmaker, Grandma, exhibited a reduced level of quilting activity in the final years preceding her demise, and this particular quilt is not considered to be among her last creations.
