About the object
this striking 7-piece ceramic set is an outstanding example of italian studio ceramics from the mid-century modern period of the 1960s. The set consists of an elegantly shaped pitcher and six matching cups, which have been given a deeply textured, tactile surface through the traditional sgraffito technique.
design & craftsmanship
the pieces are distinguished by a sophisticated glaze gradient: a deep black, metallic-sheen base (manganese glaze) transitions to a vibrant copper oxide green at the top. The hand-scratched geometric patterns—including waves, grids, and stylized leaf motifs—reveal the warm, reddish-brown terracotta clay beneath. This contrast between the glossy glaze and the matte incised lines is absolutely characteristic of high-quality art ceramics from the san marino or sesto fiorentino region (attributed to s.a.c.a.).
the inside of the cups and pitcher is smooth and darkly glazed, creating a beautiful, functional contrast to the textured exterior.
condition
the set is in excellent vintage condition with no major chips, cracks, or repairs. Minimal irregularities in the glaze are due to the artisanal manufacturing process and emphasize the authentic mid-century character.
