Born in Milan in 1924, Enrico Baj attended the Brera Academy. His first solo exhibition was organised in 1951 at the Galleria San Fedele in Milan, where he presented informal works. In 1962, he attended the exhibition “The Art of Assemblage” in New York, where he met Duchamp. In 1964, he participated in the Venice Biennale and exhibited at the Milan Triennale. Through the creation of multi-material collages, Enrico Baj expressed his criticism of society. His style is known for being provocative and often grotesque. Using a wide variety of materials, such as wood, fabrics, Meccano and hydraulic pipes, Baj gave us a monstrous vision of the world, through fashion as a degraded form of art and through the uncontrollable progress of technology: now the queen of mankind, responsible for its robotisation and the modern prevalence of form over substance.
