A striking example of mid-twentieth century German scientific pedagogy, this large-format zoological wall chart belongs to the celebrated Neue Zoologische Wandtafeln series published by Frommann & Morian Verlag, Darmstadt, and distributed by Lehrmittelverlag Hagemann, Düsseldorf. Designed by the renowned Jung-Koch-Quentell studio — whose naturalist wall charts are among the most sought-after examples of European educational graphic art — this plate depicts the anatomy and natural history of the snake in meticulous detail.
The composition presents a comprehensive visual survey of serpentine morphology: a coiled grass snake rendered in a naturalistic habitat vignette, a dramatic open-mouthed head study, detailed skeletal and skull diagrams with articulated jaw mechanics, cross-sections of the oral cavity, vertebral column elements, egg and embryo studies, and a full-length habitat scene. The illustrations are executed in rich, saturated lithographic color against a dramatic black ground, lending the piece a bold graphic presence that reads equally as fine scientific art.
The chart is preserved in its original format — chromolithograph print on paper reinforced with canvas, mounted on wooden dowels with brass rings and original hanging cord — consistent with period classroom use.
The Jung-Koch-Quentell series enjoys broad international collector demand and translates seamlessly into contemporary interiors as a statement of natural history curiosity.
NOTE: Metal hanging hook 2” for full width of 39”, poster itself is 37" wide x 44" tall
