Rare Late 19th Century Meiji Era Japanese Granite Komainu Guardian Lions Hand Carved Stone Foo Dogs / Shishi Pair (c. 1890)
This stunning pair of antique Japanese Komainu (guardian lions / lion-dogs / Shishi / Foo Dogs) was hand-carved from massive blocks of granite in Japan during the late Meiji Era (1868–1912), circa 1890 — approximately 135 years old.
Each lion sits on its own rectangular granite base and features the classic Komainu style: fierce yet majestic expressions, flowing cloud-like manes that evoke their celestial nature, and the traditional open-mouth (“a-gyō”) and closed-mouth (“un-gyō”) forms. By custom, the pair faces opposite directions to guard entrances and symbolize protection.
Origins & Symbolic Meaning
Komainu trace their roots to ancient India, traveling via the Silk Road to China, Korea, and Japan. They first appeared in Japan during the Nara period (710–794) and became outdoor guardians from the 14th century onward. The open and closed mouths together represent the sacred sound “A-Un” (the Japanese version of “Om”), embodying yin and yang, the beginning and end of all things, life and death, inhalation and exhalation. Placed at temples, shrines, or noble homes, these powerful figures ward off evil and bring balance and protection.
Perfect for Today
These substantial yet “portable” size guardians (not the giant temple versions) will look spectacular flanking a home entrance, garden gate, patio, or even indoors. They bring authentic Japanese heritage, strength, and a touch of Boho-Chic / Asian Antique elegance to any space.
Provenance
From an outstanding estate in Rolling Hills, CA — previously part of a private collection.
Dimensions (each)
11.5″ W × 22″ L × 25″ H
Weight: Approximately 300 lbs each
Materials
Hand-carved granite stone with beautiful natural patina
Condition
Good antique condition with rich original patina and weathering that adds character. Minor surface imperfections consistent with age and prior outdoor use — The lighter one of the Komainu Lions has a minor imperfection on the corner that does not distract from the beauty. Both lions were masterfully carved from the same premium block of granite. One lion has naturally aged to a slightly lighter tone than the other — this is simply how the granite has weathered over 130+ years of outdoor exposure and adds to their authentic character, having a yin and yang presence. If you prefer both lions to be exactly the same color, the aged patina can easily be power-washed off to create a perfect match. Minor surface imperfections are consistent with age and prior outdoor use — nothing structural. Solid, stable, and ready to display.
