Large hand-carved African antelope figure in the style of Bambara Chiwara sculptures, originating from West Africa and dating to the mid to late 20th century, circa 1960s–1980s. The elongated body, upright stance, and tall vertical horns reflect the traditional Chiwara form, historically associated with agricultural symbolism, growth, and spiritual connection to the land.
Carved from solid wood and mounted on a base, the piece shows clear age and authenticity. The surface has developed a natural patina with visible cracking, wear, and areas of loss consistent with vintage African tribal art. Traces of red pigment remain within the carved geometric detailing along the body, adding depth and evidence of its original finish. The carving is expressive and slightly irregular, with a strong vertical emphasis and sculptural presence.
At 41 inches tall, the piece has significant scale and works as a true statement object. The narrow footprint allows for versatile placement while maintaining strong visual impact. Well suited for interiors incorporating African art, tribal sculpture, primitive art, ethnographic objects, organic modern, wabi-sabi, and global eclectic design.
This is a vintage decorative carving made in the tradition of Bambara Chiwara forms, offering the look and cultural reference of ceremonial pieces while functioning as a sculptural work for interior display.
