Much furniture was made for European citizens during their presence in colonial India throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Further to this the British East India Company was ensuring that there was a booming trade in items which were being made in the far east, with the intention of immediate shipment to the western markets.
Confusingly therefore the phrase Anglo-Indian covers a number of different categories, using a number of different terms and sometimes more than one name being used to describe exactly the same thing. In summary however the wording Anglo-Indian is widely regarded as anything which was made for the British market and stylistically these items will usually be constructed using a classical English design, but with a twist. More often than not these items will also be constructed using the native woods of India, such as teak, camphor wood and padouk.
This is a really beautiful 19th century games table, constructed using high quality timbers and very skillfully put together. The carving of the gadrooned edge is superb, as is the carving on the column. It also retains its lovely original paw feet which are really nice.
As with all items which we offer for sale, our highly skilled, trained traditional antique furniture restorers have ensured that this chess table is presented in its best possible condition before going on sale and it has also received a natural wax polish, so it is ready for immediate placement within the home.
