This beautiful Ainu bear from the 1940s is a powerful and decorative object.
Dimensions: height 30.5 cm, width 50 cm, depth 28 cm.
Over time, the carved wood has developed a beautifully aged surface, with rich tonal variations and a warm, natural appearance. It is precisely this ageing that gives the Kibori Kuma its charm: robust and full of character, yet at the same time refined in its understated simplicity.
Kibori Kuma, literally meaning “carved wooden bear,” is closely associated with the visual culture of Hokkaido and is often linked to the Ainu, the indigenous people of northern Japan. Bears of this kind embody strength, nature, and craftsmanship, giving them not only folkloric significance but also a timeless sculptural quality.
As an interior accent, this piece works exceptionally well in a contemporary setting. The warm wood tones and weathered surface combine effortlessly with calm, minimalist interiors, where the object can be appreciated both as an artistic statement and as a subtle reference to Japanese heritage. An exceptional decorative piece with soul, volume, and a strong presence in the room.
