Designed in 1971 by Oscar Niemeyer in collaboration with his daughter Anna Maria, the Alta is one of the rare seating designs directly associated with Niemeyer’s furniture output. Produced by Mobilier International in France, this model is documented as being made for a Paris context, and is commonly linked to Niemeyer’s work on the French Communist Party headquarters.
Construction: a sculptural, ribbon-like base formed from curved steel bands that loop into a continuous support, paired with a low, reclining cushion set upholstered in black leather with button tufting. The design is a clear translation of Niemeyer’s architectural language into furniture-steel as structure, leather as volume, with the visual “float” created by the base geometry.
