These type of chairs were traditionally found in the mountain regions of Switzerland, Austria, and Southern Germany in the mid-to-late 19th century. We love the vernacular design. It was built for utility but includes charming, hand-carved decorative elements that reflect the maker's personal touch. The legs are tapered and "staked" directly into the thick wooden seat. You can see the exposed through-tenons on the seat surface, which is a hallmark of sturdy, early joinery. The heart-shaped piercing in the backrest is a common motif in Alpine furniture. While decorative, it also served a practical purpose as a hand-hold for moving the chair around a farmhouse.
